The Church Alive (The Book of Acts)

“The Church Alive” is the title of our sermon series running from May through to September, during which we will be focussing on the Book of Acts, also known as The Acts of the Apostles or simply Acts. Written by the Gospel-writer Luke, Acts is the sequel to his Gospel, describing the continued ministry of Jesus Christ through the apostles and early church after his Ascension.

The overall message of Acts could be described as:

The good news of the risen Lord Jesus spreads throughout the world, forming communities of faith made up of Spirit-filled people from every background.

Key themes and features of the story include:

  • The proclamation of Christ and expansion of his kingdom;

  • The Holy Spirit’s presence and power in God’s people, authenticating the ministry of the Apostles and empowering disciples to be Christ’s witnesses “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8);

  • The inclusion of both Jewish and non-Jewish believers in Christ;

  • The reality of threats – both internal and external - including the persecution of the Church;

  • The worship and mutual care of the Church.

May – September may seem like a long time, but there is so much packed into Acts that during that period, we will only be able to cover Part One – chapters 1-12 of the book! We’ll come back to the remaining chapters (13-28) in future years.
