Consider the Birds of the Air (Matt. 6:26)

One of the apps I’ve been enjoying recently is Merlin Bird ID. If you hear a bird singing and wonder what it is, the app can often identify it from its song. Walking around the parishes of Trowbridge and Keevil, it has helped me notice birds I might otherwise have missed, whether chiffchaffs, blackcaps, or goldfinches, whose songs fill the air through spring and summer.

As I’ve spent more time paying attention to birds, I’ve found myself returning to Jesus’ words:

“Consider the birds of the air” (Matthew 6:26).

Jesus points to birds as teachers. They do not spend their days worrying about tomorrow, yet God provides for them.

There is something wonderfully simple about the way birds live. Each day they sing, search for food, build nests, raise their young, and rest. They live as the creatures God created them to be. Watching them reminds us that we too are creatures, lovingly made and cared for by God. Of course, birds face challenges, and so do we. But Jesus invites us to look at them and remember that our lives are held in God’s hands. In a world that often feels busy and anxious, perhaps we can learn something from their trustful dependence and their songs of delight.

As summer unfolds, why not spend a few moments listening to the birds around you? You may find they point you towards gratitude, wonder, and trust in the God who made them.
